Legacy of Ashes

Tim Weiner

January 2006

Legacy of Ashes is a detailed history of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from its creation after World War II, through the Cold War years and the War on Terror. The book is based on more than 50,000 documents, primarily from the archives of the CIA, and hundreds of interviews with CIA veterans, including ten Directors of Central Intelligence. Legacy of Ashes won the 2007 National Book Award for Nonfiction.

Note: While very long and dense, the book is divided into sections that make it easy to read over a long period. Weiner's research and writing show us how the president and CIA have significantly influenced international politics and relations since the dawn of WWII. Legacy of Ashes is an essential piece of literature for anybody looking to make sense of the current global political scape and it should probably lay the ground for anybody looking to understand where The United States Stands in the global arena.
